FAQ: Creating and setting up tests

Frequently asked questions about creating and setting up tests

What are exam questions when creating a test?

The "Exam Questions only" option in the simpleclub Test Manager filters the content available in the question catalog (question pool) so that, for the test you're currently creating, you only select questions that are classified as formal or suitable for an exam simulation.

Can I swap individual exercises in a generated test?

Because tests can be adjusted after the fact, you can swap individual exercises in the "Questions" editing area.

You can find more about editing a test here.

What are "exam-relevant" questions – are they real IHK exam questions?

When you create a test, you can set how exam-relevant the questions should be. "Exam-relevant" questions are created by the simpleclub Education team and modeled on the format, difficulty level, and topic coverage of real IHK exams (depending on the job). They are not 1:1 copies of real IHK questions, but original simpleclub content developed to the same requirements.

What's the difference between a practice test, a test, and an exam simulation?

simpleclub has three ways to practice and test – what matters is who starts each one:

Feature

Who starts it

Purpose

Practice test

The trainee

Self-directed practice on topics the trainee chooses, with feedback. The optional exam mode adds a timer and holds back feedback until the end.

Exam simulation

The trainee

A complete IHK-style exam on one topic – exam-relevant questions, from start to finish.

Test (Test Manager)

You, the trainer

An exam that you create and assign. Graded on the IHK scale, with results in your Reports.

As a trainer, you create and assign the test. Practice tests and exam simulations are practice tools that your trainees use on their own.

Can a trainee retake a test? Can I reset an attempt?

Each trainee has one attempt per test, and there is currently no button to reset or delete an attempt. The number of attempts can't currently be configured in the app. If a trainee should retake the test, copy the test ("Copy" in the Test Manager) and assign the copy.

Can I still change a test's settings or participants after it has started?

Yes – most settings stay editable even after the test has begun:

  • Editable at any time: title, instructions, submission deadline (start/end date), time limit, display of correct answers/topics

  • Participants: you can add new participants at any time; participants who haven't started an attempt can be removed (participants who have already started an attempt can't be removed – this protects their results)

  • Locked after start: the questions and topics themselves, as well as the number of attempts

To change questions, create a new test (you can copy the existing one as a starting point).

Can I edit a question after the test has been published?

Once a test is published and in use, the custom questions it contains are locked – this protects answers that have already been submitted. Stopping the test or unassigning it does not unlock the question. To correct a mistake: delete the test → edit the question in the content overview → recreate the test.

A test was created and published, but the trainee can't see it.

In this case, the trainee needs to sign in again. The trainee's browser had cached the test overview, and a manual refresh (such as signing out and back in) was required to show the newly published test.

You can find more about creating a test here.

The trainee started the test, but I see the status "Not started."

The status "Not started" is shown because your trainee opened the test but hasn't officially begun taking it yet (for example, by clicking the start button). The test is only registered as "in progress" once the trainee has actively started it and (if set) the time limit is running.
